Idea House Program

The Idea House program is a collaborative effort that takes dilapidated houses in low-income neighborhoods and rehabilitates them with a holistic approach to sustainability, accessibility, and affordability. Upon completion, these homes are displayed to the community through an open house, serving as models for renovations that can be made to improve safety and energy efficiency while reducing crime throughout the community.

As part of the national Green and Healthy Homes Initiative, the Idea House program fulfills CDCU’s mission by:

  1. Providing low- to moderate-income families with safe and healthy home environments
  2. Increasing surrounding home and business value and reducing crime
  3. Providing a model for safety and energy efficiency

Common renovations made to Idea Houses include:

  • Roof replacement
  • Energy-efficient window and door installation
  • Appliance upgrades
  • Cooling and HVAC replacements
  • Energy audits
  • Duct sealing
  • Plumbing repair reducing water use
  • Hard floor installation (to prevent asthma/allergens)
